Field Trip

Problems in Bedrock Geology and Metamorphic Stratigraphy Relating to the Piermont-Frontenac Allocthon, with Robert H. Moench

Assemble by 9:00 AM on Saturday, July 15, 2000 at the rest area near Moore Dam, Exit 44 off I-93 between Littleton, NH and St. Johnsbury, VT. Follow signs from exit ramps to rest area, which is on Routes 135 & 18 about 0.1 mile south of I-93. Bring lunch, water, and hiking boots (most stops will be near roads). We will consolidate vehicles at the dam, where the trip will end between 4 and 5 PM. Family Outing and Picnic

Mount Kearsarge -- Rollins State Park, Warner, NH, with Tim Allen & Charlie Balyeat

Saturday, August 12, 2000, NHGS will pay your admission to the park -- you bring food and fixings for your own family. A 3 1/2 mile long scenic auto road rises from the park entrance (off Route 103 in Warner) through woodlands along Mission Ridge to the parking and picnic area at the "Garden," just a 1/2 mile from the summit. Tim Allen will lead a short hike to the summit of the mountain, to study the geology, before lunch (10:30) and then again after lunch (if there is sufficient interest). Other Upcoming Events

The Capital Mineral Club's 37th Annual Gem & Mineral Festival will take place September 30 through October 1, at Sunapee Resort at Sunapee State Park, Rte. 103, Newbury, NH. The show will feature over 20 dealers (wholesale and retail) of minerals, crystals, lapidary supplies, books, magazines, faceted stones, fossils, jewelry, gem carving. There are displays, hourly drawings, a club contest, a fine door prize. The hours are: Sat. 9-5, Sun. 10-4. Adults $3, Seniors $2, under 12 free with an adult. A committee has begun work writing the Mineralogy of New Hampshire. The descriptive section will be by Van King, Eugene Foord (USGS, now deceased, but had already completed much research and several articles on NH minerals), Robert Whitmore (whitmoreite), and Robert Janules. Bob Whitmore has agreed to be the senior author on a history of pegmatite mining. Whitmore and King will co-author a chapter begun by Linc Page on the USGS's presence in New England leading up to PP 255. Paul Moore (Univ. Chicago, retired) has agreed to write a perspective on mineralogical research on NH minerals and cooperate with a committee writing on Palermo. Several other specific localities will have articles on them. The North Country chapter will be chaired by Bob Janules. A locality section will feature 7.5' maps locating mines/ mineral sites. We need author(s) to write on the geological summary of NH. Additional chapters can be entertained. Free Money!

The New Hampshire Geological Society's is just waiting to give away money to applicants for the Lincoln R. Page Professional Development Fund. Anyone (including NH Earth-Space Science Teachers) who needs funds to attend a meeting or conference or take a course, that helps advance them in their geologically-related profession, can apply by writing a short letter describing their need. Please also include a note of support from your school principal, faculty advisor, or employer. Submit requests to: Lincoln R. Page Fund, New Hampshire Geological Society, PMB 133, 26 South Main Street, Concord, NH 03301 NH Earth-Space Science Teachers who need special supplies or equipment for use in teaching their students should apply for the NHGS's Classroom Equipment Grant.
