In the past there has been some confusion about the Society's membership year, and many members have been tardy in submitting their renewals, so we consulted the New Hampshire Geological Societys Corporate Bylaws:
Article III (page 5)C. Dues shall be due on the first day of June of the fiscal year.
E. Any member whose dues remain unpaid for sixty (60) days shall be dropped from membership.
According to this, the Society's membership year runs from June 1 to May 31. What about new members who join in the spring? In practice, what we have done in the past is that any new member whose membership is processed after the mailing of the spring newsletter is considered a member through the following membership year. The Society's membership application forms will be changed so as to inform new members about the membership year. What about the deadline for renewals? In the past this has been (in practice) the date of mailing for the fall newsletter. Having now consulted the Bylaws, we strongly encourage all members to get their renewals in as early in the summer as possible. As incentive, we intend to shift the publication date of the Annual Membership Directory to August--if you wish to be included in the 1995 Directory, and to continue receiving The Granite State Geologist, get your membership renewal in early. Included with this mailing is a membership renewal invoice.
With the Summer newsletter, we will be soliciting nominations for candidates to run for the Societys Board of Directors. But we will need a nominating committee to review the nominations, contact the nominees, and put together the slate of candidates. This is an important job that needs several people. If you would like to volunteer to make a few phone calls, and receive and send a few FAXes, please call Joanne McLaughlin at 603-224-7979 or Greg Kirby at 603-224-3462, or check off the appropriate box on your renewal invoice
Saturday, June 11, 2-5 pm, featuring Russell Kempton speaking about Meteorites (2 pm, NHTI Lecture Hall); a pizza party in the garden (weather permitting) and a chance to view the meteorite exhibit; and the Planetarium's new Pathfinders show (4 pm). To register, use the form on the reverse. For more information contact Greg Kirby, 603-271-3624.
Watch for a summer issue of The Granite State Geologist, to be mailed in early July, containing complete details regarding the August 6th field trip that will be lead by Carl Koteff of the USGS. The deadline for submissions to be included in that summer issue is June 20--send submissions to Tim Allen, Geology Dept., Mailstop 2001, Keene. State College, Keene, NH 03435-2001, FAX (603) 358-2257.
The NHGS will be hosting a Family Outing to the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium, Saturday, June 11, 2-5 pm, featuring Russell Kempton speaking about Meteorites, a pizza party in the garden (weather permitting) and a chance to view the meteorite exhibit; and the Planetarium's new Pathfinders show. To register, use the form in this mailing. For more information contact Greg Kirby, 603-271-3624.
Membership Renewal Invoices are also included in this mailing. The Society's membership year runs from June 1 to May 31 (see story inside).
Carl Koteff will be leading our summer Field Trip this year, on August 6--details will be published in a forthcoming summer issue of The Granite State Geologist.
The 1994 Annual Meeting will be October 13, featuring the elections of officers. Nominations of candidates will be solicited with the summer issue of The Granite State Geologist, but first we need volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee (see story inside).
Future Meetings are scheduled for January 12, April 13, June 8 (tentative), and October 12, 1995, with a field trip August 5, 1995. For reference, the Society schedules its meetings for the second Thursday of the appropriate month, and its field trip for the first Satuday in August.
The 1995 NHGS Membership Directory will be published this August, as incentive for you to get your membership renewal in on time (see story inside). This time we'll make sure that all members are included, and that the Directory successfully makes it throught the mail.
The deadline for publication in the next The Granite State Geologist is June 20, and for the fall issue, September 10. Of course, you don't have to wait until the deadline to submit an article! Send submissions anytime to: Tim Allen, Geology Dept., Mailstop 2001, Keene State College, Keene, NH 03435-2001, telephone: (603) 358-2571, FAX: (603) 358-2257, internet: tallen@keene.edu.
Electronic Submissions are encouraged, on either PC or Mac disks. Save your file as plain ASCII TEXT, and send a hard-copy too (just in case).
