Geology Field Trip Description
Carl Koteff, USGS Reston office, retired, and a surficial geology mapper and advisor for the NH Geological Survey's Mapping Program will lead this trip in Hopkinton, NH. Carl will share his wealth of experience making field interpretations and mapping Quaternary (late Neogene) surficial geology. Accompany Carl as we make a number of field stops in the Hopkinton, NH 1:24000 quadrangle. These stops were selected to demonstrate how one "reads" the surficial geology. Assistant leaders from the NHGS staff will accompany us.
We will meet at 9:00 am in the parking lot behind St. Andrew's Church Parish House on Main Street in Hopkinton Village, NH. (Go to Mapquest.com and type in 354 Main Street, Hopkinton, NH). Carpools will be set up in the parking lot. Plan for a prompt departure at 9:30 am.
After a GREAT picnic lunch, Carl has a few geologic "surprises" as we continue to figure out the Pleistocene events for this interesting quadrangle. There is no charge for current GSNH members (including lunch). There will be a trip charge of $10 for non-members, payable in the morning at the sign-in on July 14.
The trip is scheduled to run from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Geologists interested in earning continuing education credits will earn 6.0 continuing education hours. Certificates will be available at the end of the trip.
Pre-registration is required for this trip. Please RSVP to Lee Wilder at boslwne@tds.net by noon Friday July 13, 2007. If you are signing up for more than yourself, please provide the names of the other participants.
We look forward to seeing you on July 14! In the event of rain, the status of the trip will be posted on this website by 7:00 pm Friday July 13. If we postpone the trip to Sunday, the schedule of the day will be the same
Note: This trip will be a series of carpool stops and short hikes. Please be prepared with layers of clothing and sturdy footwear for variable weather and walking conditions. Hats, sunscreen and bug spray are also recommended. Be sure to bring a water bottle for hydration.
